Barnabé Richard – Cabinetmaker and material designer

Ile de France – 1991

Barnabé Richard is a cabinetmaker and material designer. He began his journey in woodworking with a vocational diploma (BEP) in carpentry before perfecting his craft at École Boulle. In 2014, he founded his eponymous workshop, marking the beginning of his entrepreneurial path.

As a visual artist, Barnabé consistently explores the potential of materials. His artistic direction was significantly shaped by a trip to Japan, leading him to research matter and textures, which he experiments with by playing with contrasts and reliefs. In 2018, he set up his workshop in a 300m2 space in Corbreuse.

With his expertise in woodworking, Barnabé has also extended his know-how to metal, incorporating techniques from various fields including hammering and high-speed machining. The fusion of wood and metal, among other elements, combined with his mastery of these techniques, allows Barnabé to craft unique materials, textures, and finishes.

His customer base is mainly composed of private clients, interior designers, luxury houses, and art dealers.

Research and innovation

Barnabé has developed a unique coating, made with natural elements and a low chemical content. It combines traditional binders with synthetic pigments and mineral fillers. This adaptable coating offers a multitude of applications and patterns. By adjusting the raw materials and their ratios, Barnabé can thus craft bespoke textures.

Barnabé is deeply committed to an eco-friendly approach, minimizing chemical use and responsibly managing his waste, notably by valorizing wood waste.

Transmission

Barnabé Richard has welcomed nearly 40 interns with varied profiles to his workshop since 2015.  He also trains apprentices in CAP and BMA cabinet making. Deeply involved in the education of future craftsmen, Barnabé shares his know-how at École Boulle.

To safeguard his health, that of his apprentices, and to improve finishing quality, Barnabé Richard plans to equip his workshop with a spray booth featuring an extraction wall, in accordance with CRAM requirements. He is seeking the Foundation’s support to acquire a portion of this crucial equipment.
