Agnès Sevestre– Chiseller and art bronzer

Ile-de-France – 1991

Immersed in her grandfather’s world of craftsmanship from a young age, where repair was prioritized over replacement, Agnès developed a sensitivity to materials. Despite initial literary studies (Hypokhâgne), Agnès followed the path of craftsmanship, entering École Boulle. In 2013, she graduated with a DMA in chasing and further specializing in bronze mounting.

She worked in various workshops restoring and creating lighting and art objects until 2018 when she opened her own workshop. In 2021, she was recognized as a master artisan in chasing and set up her workshop at the Cité des Taillandiers.

Research and innovation

Agnès creates objects and sculptures in brass, copper, and bronze in her workshop at the Cité des Taillandiers in Paris. Being part of this artisan community has led to collaborations with other craftspeople, including mosaicist, clockmakers, and other artists. Deeply committed to sustainable practices, Agnès sources her raw materials from local artisans, transforming their brass and copper offcuts into works of art. In this way, she shares her own remnants with other artisans within the Cité, perpetuating this this sustainable practice. This short supply chain, established three years ago, allows her to work with a variety of clients, from individuals and professionals to luxury houses, historical monuments and institutions.

Transmission

With only 100 chiselers remaining in France, Agnès has dedicated the last decade to actively sharing her know-how. Her teaching approach includes the publication of a book entitled “Discovering Chiseling”, leading workshops during the European Artistic Crafts Days (JEMA) with the support of the European Crafts Alliance and teaching in DNMADE Metal Creation at ENSAAMA Olivier de Serres. She has also developed immersive workshops, particularly for young audiences, through collaborations with associations such as Ré-enchantement and De l’Or dans les mains. In addition, she benefits from the assistance of interns. This commitment demonstrates her desire to preserve and transmit this valuable know-how.

To support her intern training program, Agnès has approached the Foundation to acquire additional workbenches and chairs, along with chiseling tools and materials (cement, boulets, handles and masses for hammers, mallets, lifting beams, etc.) to enhance the student learning environment.
